Today Apple released a new version of iTunes with a social sharing element they've called “Ping”. Like Twitter or Facebook it allows you to follow people, whether friend, celebrity or artist, but it's only about the music.

You'll be able to see what the people you follow are buying and rating, and keep up with new releases with your favourite bands.

What I'm really looking forward to though is the ability for independent musicians (for example that guy with those great tunes… wotzisname? Oh yeah, ME!) to create their own official pages. I'm hoping that Apple get around to providing this feature soon. The huge base of hundreds of millions of music-buying iTunes users is there waiting to be tapped, and with the added ability to purchase concert tickets it's potentially a fantastic store front for artists.

In the meantime if you want to follow my personal Ping profile I'd be glad to see you!

Found a Ping Bug!!!

Firstly though they need to fix this because it's annoying me! If a song, artist or album title contains an apostrophe the view is broken when you roll your mouse over the album cover. For example, for my song “(She's So) Bitchy” Ping will only display characters up until the apostrophe (see image below).
