I have a new favourite thing in my studio. It's not a piece of hardware. It's not an effect plug-in. It doesn't even make any sound. Heck, it's not even a lava lamp! It sits there, quietly but effectively doing its job, giving me a sense of security and peace of mind.
Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to [insert drum roll sampled from an old GM sound module here]…
Every studio, professional or home, should have Gobbler. It's a fantastic new service that keeps a watch on all the audio projects on your hard drives whether they are small or large, made with Logic, Cubase, Garageband, Reaper, Pro Tools or most other DAW software.
Most importantly, you can tell Gobbler to backup your chosen projects “in the cloud” meaning that should the worst happen and you were to lose all the data for a session you would still be able to download the most recently uploaded version and get straight back to work. And Gobbler will keep a track of all changes you make so there's no need to constantly upload all the files. Using a clever lossless compression system Gobbler uploads only the parts that need uploading and does it much faster than you would expect.
It also acts as a library. Can't remember what disk you'd used for a recording session? Gobbler will tell you. And when you reconnect the drive it'll get straight back to backing up again – no need for human intervention!
I'm really only just scratching the surface here. Gobbler includes tagging, file transfers, SoundCloud integration… and these guys are serious about building the best product they can. Constant improvements are being made and their customer service so far has been very impressive.
In my opinion Gobbler is a must-have for any studio and because they are in beta it's currently FREE! In fact, if you sign up now (before June 27th 2011) you'll get a whopping 50GB of online storage space. After that you'll get 25GB but in either case once the beta phase is over you will get to keep that storage space at the lowest pricing tier.
Why not sign up and give it a try? I can honestly say it's taken a weight off of my mind and I'd be very lost without it now! The Windows version isn't quite ready yet, but if you sign up before June 27th you'll get the 50GB anyway, ready for when the Windows client is released. I'm using it on my Mac – it's problem-free, safe and very user-friendly.
